Abstract

Magnetoelastic demagnetization of load-bearing I-beams of an automobile overpass in the city of Tyumen during one month of its operation in different modes of traffic intensity has been studied. A removable tensometric device with internal storage for measuring the tensile strain of the carrier beam of an automobile bridge during its bending caused by the passage of vehicles has been developed, manufactured, and tested. On one of the beams under study, the dependence of the change in the strength of the stray magnetic field of its local remanent magnetization (LRM) on the mechanical tensile strain on the surface of the beam during its bending was established. The resulting dependence was used to calibrate the magnitude of the magnetoelastic demagnetization of eight studied steel beams of the automobile overpass according to the level of maximum strain they experienced during one month of observation. The dependence showed that the method of determining the magnetoelastic sensitivity (MES) using impact gives fairly reliable results and can be used on metal structures that cannot be loaded for calibration. The peak values of mechanical stresses of axial tension in the I-beams of the overpass were assessed by the level of demagnetization in the magnetoelastic memory mode caused by the dynamic impact of a passing vehicle. The method does not require attachment of expensive sensors and tracking equipment and can be implemented without major capital investment.
