Investigation of ageing effects on asphalt mixtures: correlations between laboratory- and plant-based performance metrics
Source abstract
Abstract
The major objective of this study was to develop performance-based correlations to assess the impact of aging on the rutting and fatigue cracking performance of asphalt mixtures produced at the hot-mix asphalt plant and in the laboratory, as well as on materials collected behind the paver during construction, considering the effects of short- and long-term aging on key performance parameters. Seven asphalt mixtures were produced and evaluated for material characteristics under varying aging conditions. Results indicated a substantial increase in stiffness and fracture toughness of the plant-based mixtures by 50–98% under prolonged aging, accompanied by a 70–84% reduction in fatigue life and fracture energy, along with increased vulnerability to moisture damage in long-term-aged mixtures. Further, plant-based mixtures experienced pronounced aging effects compared to the laboratory-based due to realistic field aging conditions encountered during production and handling at the plant, thus emphasising the need for refining laboratory aging protocols to better reflect field conditions.
