Quantification and deodorisation of emissions from high content rubber modified asphalt
Source abstract
Abstract
High content rubber modified asphalt (HCRMA) has been utilised due to improved durability of asphalt pavement and efficient recycling of solid waste. However, the potential increased emissions of HCRMA would cause air pollution, which is not well quantitatively evaluated and effectively controlled. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry was applied to quantitatively evaluate the organic emissions sampled in laboratory. A portable gas analyzer was used to monitor the real-time emission concentration of H2S, SO2, NOX and CO. Montmorillonite, attapulgite, and illite were added to HCRMA as emission reduction agents respectively. All three emission reduction agents can effectively suppress the organic emission odours of 30AR and 40AR. Attapulgite, montmorillonite, and illite can all reduce the concentration of HCRMA inorganic emissions. Montmorillonite has its large pore volume and excellent microstructure. The addition of montmorillonite can improve the high-temperature performance of HCRMA. However, montmorillonite has a negative impact on the low-temperature performance, fatigue resistance, and workability of HCRMA.
