Abstract

This study established a new evaluation system for morphological characteristics of aggregate particles based on the results of aggregate particle scanning tests and proposed a new algorithm for generating two-dimensional (2D) digital aggregate particles with complex and controllable shapes. Results showed that each index in the evaluation system established in this study has strong independence and can characterise the morphological features of aggregates from different perspectives. The algorithm proposed in this study can effectively generate 2D digital aggregate particles by combining the geometric generation method and isometric scaling method. Through visual comparison and statistical validation methods, the generated aggregate particles closely match the morphological characteristics of the original aggregate particles, which verifies the effectiveness of the algorithm for generating digital aggregate particles proposed in this study. The generated 2D digital aggregate particles are used to establish asphalt specimens in ABAQUS for numerical simulation and 3D aggregate particles.
