Carbon and glass fibre composite waste-modified asphalt binders: compatibility assessment, dosage optimisation, and performance evaluation
Source abstract
Abstract
The objective of this research was to investigate the feasibility of utilising composite wastes (CW), particularly fibre-reinforced polymer (FRP) in asphalt binders through physicochemical compatibility assessment and evaluate the mechanical performance of CW-modified asphalt binder variants using the state-of-the-art material characterisation techniques. The scope included physicochemical characterisation of carbon fibre-reinforced polymer (CFRP) and glass fibre-reinforced polymer (GFRP) recyclates and production of CW-modified asphalt binder (CWMB) at three dosages: 1, 5 and 10% by weight of the base asphalt. The tests demonstrated potential compatibility between CW and asphalt owing to the presence of alkyl and aromatic functional groups alongside notable thermal stability of the CWMB variants. Further, CFRP-modified asphalt binders displayed higher ageing resistance than the GFRP-modified asphalt binders. The multifactorial performance-based ranking approach adjudged 10% CFRP and 5% GFRP as the optimum dosages for asphalt modification, as they exhibited superior high-temperature performance without compromising storage stability and ageing characteristics.
