Abstract

This study evaluated the applicability of I-FIT and IDEAL-CT tests and indices for emulsified asphalt cold recycled mixtures and proposed modifications to the I-FIT analysis and a revised IDEAL-CT cracking index. Polypropylene, A-glass, para-aramid, and polyester synthetic fibres were added in varying lengths and contents, and IDEAL-CT along with dry and wet ITS tests were used to determine the optimum fibre configurations. The combined effects of optimised fibres and cement were also assessed. Results showed that fibres generally improved dry strength and cracking resistance but increased moisture sensitivity. Shorter lengths and lower contents generally enhanced strength but reduced crack resistance. The combined use of cement and fibres retained the strength and moisture resistance benefits of cement while improving cracking resistance. In some cases, these combinations outperformed mixtures with higher asphalt content. Overall, polypropylene and polyester fibres provided the most consistent improvements in mechanical and cracking performance.
