Experimental setup and thermo-viscoelastic FEM analysis of eRoads under diurnal thermal loading cycles in warm conditions
Source abstract
Abstract
This study develops a laboratory-scale test to evaluate the thermo-viscoelastic behaviour of electric roads (eRoads) under diurnal thermal cycling in warm conditions (15-55°C) typical of summers in oceanic climates. The primary objective is to evaluate the temperature, strain and stress fields within the road materials and the electric road system (ERS). Firstly, a specimen instrumented with temperature probes was subjected to 15 thermal loading cycles and the results were compared with FEM simulations to calibrate the thermal parameters of the thermo-viscoelastic (ThVE) model. Secondly, a specimen instrumented with five temperature probes and seven strain gauges at the asphalt concrete / ERS support interface was subjected to twelve day/night cycles. Experimental and numerical results showed a strong correlation for five strain gauges, with minor discrepancies for the other two. A field-scale FEM simulation using the ThVE model provided insight into the thermal and mechanical fields evolution in a typical eRoad section.
