Clay stabilisation using Persian gum and polyvinyl alcohol
Source abstract
Abstract
This study investigates the effects of Persian gum (PG) and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) as environmentally friendly stabilizers for clay, comparing them with lime (L) and cement (E). Tests on clay mixtures with varying percentages of PG, PVA, L, and E over curing durations of 1, 3, 7, 28, and 90 days showed that a 2.5% PG and 2.5% PVA mixture significantly improved the compressive strength and cohesion of clay after seven days. The energy density of this mixture was 5.5 times that of clay treated with 15% lime. Microstructural analyses (SEM, BET, TGA, PSA) revealed a 52% reduction in total pore volume and enhanced thermal stability. Additionally, CO2 emissions from soil stabilization using PG were, on average, 430 kg lower than with cement for the same strength. Furthermore, statistical models were developed to predict UCS and cohesion based on PG and PVA content.
