Abstract

Abstract The engineering properties of alkali-activated materials (AAMs) are closely related to the selection of precursors. Alkali-activated metakaolin-blast furnace slag blends (alkali-activated MK-BFS blends) takes full advantage of the potentially complementary properties of the two precursors, showing favorable early-age properties, mechanical properties and durability. This study begins with concluding references focus on reaction evolution and mechanism of alkali-activated MK-BFS blends, and the effects of relevant parameters on consistency, fluidity and setting time are systematically analyzed and summarized. Followed with a presentation of research findings on mechanical properties of alkali-activated MK-BFS blends with respect to compressive, flexural, splitting tensile and interfacial adhesive strengths. Subsequently, the durability of alkali-activated MK-BFS blends is examined and concluded in terms of permeability, carbonation, frost and high temperature resistances. Eventually, the future perspective of alkali-activated MK-BFS blends are reasonably proposed. This paper facilitates researchers to thoroughly understand properties of alkali-activated MK-BFS blends and provides thoughts and references for subsequent research as well as engineering applications.
