Abstract

A method for the synthesis of uniform dye-embedded organosilica nanoparticles with a size of sub-5 nm via cocondensation of the dye and atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) initiator-functionalized organosilanes is presented. Hybrid particles are amenable to direct grafting of polymer chains from the nanoparticle surface without the need for additional anchoring of initiating groups. The dye-embedded organosilica–poly(methyl methacrylate) brush particles were processed into flexible films and demonstrated outstanding stability enhancement against halochromism as compared to the pristine dye.
