Abstract

Energy savings are necessary in both the home and workplace and methods of insulating buildings to maintain suitable temperatures vary, but concrete masonry blocks are commonly used. The various types of insulation systems for concrete masonry blocks are examined by studying the purpose of insulation, the methods of this insulation and comparing economic results of various systems. A new patented system where a rigid polyurethane foam is cast on the full face of the concrete block, avoiding thermal bridges, is described. Existing methods of insulating concrete blocks are reviewed and some disadvantages are identified. The new system has several major advantages which are discussed and the claims made are supported by independent data obtained from Salford University, Warrington Fire Research Centre and Belfast University. Applications for the new system in offices and housing schemes, both private and government, are described.
