Sono-piezodynamic therapy for drug-resistant bacteria infection
Source abstract
Abstract
The emergence of drug-resistant bacterial infections presents a critical challenge to public health, necessitating the development of novel therapeutic approaches. Sono-piezodynamic therapy (SPDT) is an innovative treatment that combines ultrasound waves with piezoelectric materials to combat drug-resistant pathogens. This therapy exploits the mechanical and electrical effects generated by ultrasound-activated piezoelectric materials to disrupt bacterial cell walls and membranes, enhancing their permeability and leading to bacterial eradication. The key advantages of SPDT include its non-invasive nature, selective targeting of infected areas, reduced likelihood of inducing drug resistance, and synergistic enhancement of conventional strategy efficacy. Preliminary studies have demonstrated the potential of SPDT against various drug-resistant bacteria, including drug-resistant gram-positive and gram-negative pathogens, in both in vitro and in vivo models. SPDT represents a cutting-edge approach with the potential to revolutionize the management of drug-resistant bacterial infections, offering a safer and more effective alternative to traditional antibiotic therapies. In this perspective, we summarize the mechanism and biological properties of SPDT and discuss its plausible future challenges and opportunities.
