Abstract

Radioactive noble gases, including krypton ( 85 Kr), xenon ( 133 Xe, 135 Xe), and radon ( 222 Rn), pose substantial radiological risks, highlighting the urgent requirement for high-performance solid adsorbents that enable their selective separation and effective capture. Herein, we detail the strategic design and successful synthesis of an ultramicroporous carbon material, PDA-800-2, prepared using polydopamine (PDA) as the carbon precursor, potassium oxalate as the pore-forming agent, and carbonization at 800 °C. With a bimodal micropore architecture and a large specific surface area, PDA-800-2 achieves a significant Xe uptake of 6.42 mmol·g –1 and a Rn adsorption coefficient of 18.01 L·g –1 . This study proposes a strategy for preparing ultramicroporous carbon that effectively enhances its adsorption and separation performance for radioactive noble gases.
