Quasi-solid lithium-ion cells built with water-soluble pectin and PEG electrolytes
Source abstract
Abstract
Lithium-ion battery electrolytes based on biodegradable polymers may offer advantages in recycling. Here, we present an eco-friendly quasi-solid lithium-ion battery employing gel polymer electrolytes (GPEs) made from pectin and polyethylene glycol, paired with LiFePO 4 cathodes. This GPE design enhances mechanical strength, ionic conductivity, interfacial stability, and capacity retention while offering sustainability through its water-soluble and recyclable characteristics. The influence of various lithium salts (lithium bis -trifluoromethanesulfonyl-imide [LiTFSI], LiNO 3 , and Li 2 SO 4 ) on GPE performance was investigated, with LiNO 3 -based GPEs showing superior mechanical properties, high ionic conductivity, and a significant Li⁺ transference number. Electrochemical testing demonstrated 79% capacity retention over 270 cycles at 1C/3C rates and excellent rate performance up to 10C. Energy-density analysis for 18650 cells revealed 146 Wh kg −1 and 4.1 kW kg −1 , surpassing commercial cells. These findings demonstrate the capability of GPE technology to deliver sustainable and high-performance energy-storage solutions.
