Abstract

Conventional characterization of nanomaterial optics relies on ensemble averaging, an approach that masks the decisive contribution of individual nanoparticle properties to the collective optical behavior. To resolve this, we introduce an In 3+ surface segregation strategy that yields exceptionally uniform NaGdF 4:Er nanoparticles (coefficient of variation of 3.36%). Using this well-defined model system, we delineate two distinct mechanisms through which minimized heterogeneity (in size) dictates ensemble behavior: it (i) suppresses size-dependent interparticle energy transfer, which stabilizes spectral output (e.g., reducing the 4 S 3/2 -to- 2 H 11/2 intensity ratio by up to 28%), and (ii) synchronizes emission kinetics under 980 nm pulsed excitation, leading to an enhancement of pulse response sensitivity by up to 26.7-fold. This work establishes precise control over intrinsic heterogeneity as a fundamental and quantifiable design parameter, providing a general principle for tailoring light–matter interactions in nanocrystal ensembles and enabling the predictive design of tailored collective optical phenomena.
