Perturbative renormalization group approach to magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene using topological heavy fermion model
Source abstract
Abstract
The authors present here a renormalization group analysis of the topological heavy fermion model in magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene. In the energy regime where interactions and hybridization compete, renormalization drives the system toward the chiral limit, lowering the effective interaction strength relative to hybridization. This work bridges the Kondo-like and Mott semimetal scenarios, providing a foundation for modeling the low-energy physics of strongly correlated moir\'e flat bands.

59. A gap generally opens away from CNP when particle-hole symmetry is broken. At CNP, the gap at Γ can also open in the presence of finite mass terms (M), exchange interaction (J), or external magnetic fields. Moreover, gapless behavior also emerges in the U≫γ limit under the chiral flat limit (M,v★→0) [49] and within one-shot Hartree-Fock treatments, assuming interaction-induced symmetry breaking [34].

62. Theoretically, Λ can be taken as +∞ to get a full continuum model that contains all higher remote bands, although they do not match the higher remote bands in the BM model.
63. While incorporating extended moiré Brillouin zones beyond the first is required for quantitatively reproducing the Bistritzer-MacDonald minibands [34, 35, 49], the key qualitative features discussed here remain entirely unaffected by this approximation keeping only the first mBZ.
64. Adding small bandwidth M, which is a matrix element between c3 and c4 fermions, breaks such symmetry and hybridizes C=±1 Chern bands.
