Abstract

The authors reveal here how competing insulating phases---Mott and band insulators---coexist and interact in layered quantum materials. Combining surface-sensitive electron scattering technique and bulk-sensitive optical probe, they resolve distinct electronic excitations---Mott and band insulator gaps---and track their temperature evolution, uncovering a universal mechanism where interlayer coupling compete with local correlations near phase transitions.
