Optimizing FeS2 Photo-Fenton Catalysis: Adsorption for Stability and S-Type Heterojunction Mechanism
Source abstract
Abstract
Maintaining the stability of the nano-FeS 2 photo-Fenton catalyst is a significant challenge in environmental remediation. In this study, nano-FeS 2 was synthesized through an in situ high-temperature reaction between sublimed sulfur (S) and FeOOH under an argon atmosphere. Furthermore, FeS 2 was composited with polyethylene glycol 2000 (PEG-2000)-modified BiOBr to develop a nano photo-Fenton catalyst, named FeS 2 –PEG-BiOBr (FSPBB), with enhanced enrichment capabilities. In the FSPBB/H 2 O 2 /light system, FeS 2 serves as an electron-transfer mediator, enhancing the Fenton-like catalytic performance. The introduction of −OH groups on the BiOBr surface through PEG modification significantly enhanced the adsorption capacity of the FSPBB for organic pollutants. The synergistic effect between the adsorption and the photo-Fenton reaction enabled the highly efficient removal of rhodamine B (RhB) by FSPBB within 20 min at pH 3. The unique electron transfer mechanism of the formed S-type heterojunction between FeS 2 and BiOBr further improved the catalytic stability of FSPBB. After 5 cyclic tests, the catalytic efficiency was improved from 30% of FeS 2 to 80% of FSPBB. Quenching experiments and electron spin resonance (ESR) analysis confirmed that •OH radicals were the primary reactive species involved in the catalytic degradation.
