Pt Nanoparticles Electrodeposited on an Ultrathin Nitrogen-Rich Underlayer for Methanol Sensors
Source abstract
Abstract
Developing highly efficient nanoscale catalysts for the methanol oxidation reaction (MOR) remains crucial for advancements in methanol detection across various applications, from fuel cells to fermented beverage analysis. This study explores the potential of using nanometer-thick, nitrogen-rich organic layers as functional hosting carpets to improve the catalytic activity of electrodeposited platinum nanoparticles (Pt NPs). We demonstrate that strategically engineering the nitrogen content within these layers allows for modulation of the Pt nanoparticle size and, consequently, their catalytic performance. Notably, a nanometer-thick triazole-based layer facilitates the generation of Pt NPs exhibiting good mass activity (122 A·g –1 ), and more importantly, high CO tolerance ( I F / I B ratio of 11.6). Additionally, the resulting electrode displays a broad linear range for methanol detection (10 μM–1 M), with a low detection limit (3.8 μM) and high sensitivity (275 mA·mM – ·cm Pt –2 ).
