Investigation of the durability of bio-resin-coated hemp based Textile Reinforced Mortar (TRM)
Source abstract
Abstract
Recent research has increasingly focused on the use of natural fiber–based composites, such as Textile Reinforced Mortars (TRMs), as sustainable solutions for the strengthening of existing masonry structures. However, previous study showed that untreated hemp yarns are highly vulnerable to alkaline environments, which limits their long-term performance in cementitious matrices. To address this challenge, the present study investigates hemp yarns coated with a bio-based epoxy resin DGEBA and evaluates their durability under conditions simulating lime and ettringite mortar environments. Accelerated aging tests at different pH levels and temperatures, combined with natural aging within TRM specimens, were carried out. The mechanical response of both yarns and full TRM composites was analyzed, showing that the DGEBA bio-resin treatment significantly enhanced the stability of hemp fibers and improved the tensile performance of hemp-based TRMs.
