NiRe Nanoparticles Supported on CeO 2 Nanorods for the Selective Hydrogenolysis of Tetrahydrofurfuryl Alcohol to 1,5-Pentanediol
Source abstract
Abstract
Selective hydrogenolysis of biomass-derived tetrahydrofurfuryl alcohol (THFA) into the value-added diol 1,5-pentanediol (1,5-PDO) using non-noble metal catalysts remains a significant challenge. Herein, we report an efficient NiRe bimetallic catalyst supported on morphology-controlled rod-shaped ceria (NiRe/r-CeO 2 ), achieving a 94% yield of 1,5-PDO with an excellent selectivity of 97%. The outstanding catalytic performance is attributed to the electronic synergy between Ni and Re in the alloy phase, as well as enhanced metal–support interaction (MSI) enabled by the redox-active CeO 2 nanorods. These features collectively promote alloy stabilization, active site retention, and selective C–O bond cleavage. Moreover, the catalyst exhibits robust recyclability and sustained performance over multiple cycles. This study presents a practical and sustainable catalytic strategy for biomass conversion by combining NiRe alloy synergy with morphology-enhanced metal–support interaction.
