Abstract

X12Cr13 martensitic stainless steels (MSS), widely used in pumps, valves and shafts, are low-carbon alloys and have high-temperature strengths and magnetic behaviours. This study investigates the effects of incorporating 20 wt% glass powder (GP) and Portland limestone cement (PLC) on the structural, thermophysical and magnetic properties of MSS processed via powder metallurgy. Both additives enhanced the hardness and thermal capacity of the composites, while reducing density and magnetic performance. The MSS-20PLC composite exhibited the highest hardness (126.45 N/mm²), specific heat capacity (0.98 J/g°C at 565°C temperatures) and enthalpy (473.74 J/g at 565 °C), but also showed the lowest density (4.086 g/cm³) and saturation magnetisation (130.08 emu/g at 380 K), attributed to reduced Fe content and increased Na incorporation. In contrast, the MSS control sample achieved the highest saturation magnetisation (178.93 emu/g at 300 K) due to its iron-rich, denser microstructure. All samples displayed soft magnetic behaviour, with decreasing magnetisation as the temperature increased. These findings demonstrate that GP and PLC additives can significantly tailor the multifunctional properties of MSS for potential applications in thermal management and structural components requiring magnetic softness.
