Abstract

Investigating high-efficiency electrocatalysts toward hydrogen evolution reaction under wide pH conditions is a pivotal task for large-scale hydrogen generation. Herein, a straightforward reduction method is developed for the synthesis of amorphous Ru coupled with defect-abundant B-doped FeP 4 /Fe 2 P porous nanospheres (Ru/B- p -FeP 4 /Fe 2 P) at an ambient environment. The porous structure and abundant defects expose rich active sites and favor mass and electron transfer in the electrochemical reaction process. In addition, the introduced Ru also favors boosting the reaction kinetics. Thus, the designed Ru/B- p -FeP 4 /Fe 2 P catalyst possesses low overpotentials of 44, 55, 92, and 72 mV to drive 10 mA cm –2 in acidic, alkaline, neutral, and alkaline seawater electrolytes. This work provides a rapid approach to synthesizing pH universal metal phosphide catalysts at room temperature.
