Engineering Nano/Mesoporous Ru/RuO2 Heterostructured Films for Water Splitting
Source abstract
Abstract
The design and development of efficient nanocatalysts are critical for sustainable hydrogen production via electrochemical water splitting. In this study, we synthesize mesoporous ruthenium film on Ni foam (mRu/NF) by micelle-assisted electrodeposition, followed by annealing in air to obtain mesoporous heterogeneous Ru-RuO 2 film on NF (mRu/RuO 2 /NF) for alkaline water splitting. The mRu/RuO 2 /NF possesses low overpotentials for the oxygen evolution reaction (243 mV) and hydrogen reduction reaction (53 mV) at 50 mA cm –2 due to the high nanoporosity and heterogeneous interfaces. When mRu/RuO 2 /NF is applied to both the anode and cathode, the electrolyzer needs a lower potential of 1.587 V to drive the current density of 100 mA cm –2 than the commercial Pt/C/NF||IrO 2 /NF system (1.780 V). This study confirms the importance of interfacial engineering in the enhancement of water splitting.
