Abstract

Abstract Nanotechnology based alternative treatments against multiple drug-resistant pathogens with special context to endometritis is appreciable, that otherwise makes it difficult in the case of conventional treatment protocols nowadays. The present study was designed to assess the structural characteristics of tungsten oxide nanoparticles (W) coupled antibiotics, safety profiles, and their antibacterial potential against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli isolated from human endometritis. The nanoparticles were prepared through a chemical reduction method and characterized by X-ray diffraction, FTIR, SEM, and UV-visible spectra techniques. The characterization parameters revealed oval shape and well-defined crystallinity of tungsten oxide (WO 3 ) nanoparticles. The antibacterial potential, in terms of zone of inhibition (ZOI) against mixed bacterial culture was best expressed by tungsten oxide nanoparticles coupled with ciprofloxacin, while against a single culture of E. coli was better shown by W coupled with oxytetracycline. It was pertinent to note that the minimum inhibitory concentration of nanoparticle-coupled antibiotics was significantly lower than that of nanoparticles alone. The safety profiles of nanoparticle-coupled antibiotics revealed moderate to lower cytotoxicity compared with that of positive control. However, with an increase in concentration of products, the mitotic and phase indices were decreased for all preparations. This study therefore concluded that tungsten oxide nanoparticles coupled antibiotics as well-formed products that significantly modulated resistance in single and mixed bacterial cultures, while the toxicity expected to be adhered with these products was nominal.
