Abstract

Abstract In this article an overview of current developments in the area of nanostructured inorganic wires, rods and tubes will be given. First and briefly fundamental viewpoints of physical properties will be discussed followed by a presentation of the synthetic techniques to obtain 1D inorganic nanostructured morphologies. Emphasis is then laid on current developments which are based on the special properties of these structures with respect to piezoelectricity, biosensing, nano‐micro integration of inorganic nanostructures, current developments in the area of circuiting with inorganic 1D structures and integration of ordered arrangements of 1D structures into device architectures.
