Nanotechnology Risk Communication
Source abstract
Abstract
This chapter explores labeling issues, delves into how people make judgments about nanotechnology in the absence of specific information, provides a snapshot of recent research on awareness and decisions about nanotechnology. Risk communication—including specific forms of communications ranging from labeling to stakeholder engagement—is called for by nanotechnology regulatory strategies in some nations. Nanotechnology and its potential risks are impossible to perceive without descriptions and visualizations—that is, communications. Nanotechnology is intangible, invisible, scientifically complex, and replete with risk unknowns; it promises solutions to many of the world's ills and has a wildly touted economic potential. It concludes with an appeal for more risk communication about nanotechnology and more science in nanotechnology risk communication. Risk communication—including specific forms of communications ranging from labeling to stakeholder engagement—is called for by nanotechnology regulatory strategies in some nations.
