Abstract

To enhance the efficacy of nutraceuticals, drug-delivery systems using nanotechnology represent an innovative way to effectively increase their efficacy, oral bioavailability, and alleviate other barriers. This chapter gives brief details of the full therapeutic potential gained with the utilization of nanotechnology in nutraceuticals. It focuses on nanotechnology to improve the deliverability of nutraceuticals. To enhance the efficacy of nutraceuticals, drug-delivery systems using nanotechnology such as liposome, nanoparticles, nanosuspension, and polymeric micelle effectively increase the solubility, therapeutic efficacy, permeability, oral bioavailability, and stability. The use of nanotechnology will enhance the solubility, oral bioavailability, physiological performance, and thermal stability of poorly absorbed nutraceuticals. Nanotechnology can improve solubility, gastrointestinal stability, and oral bioavailability of micronutrients/nutraceuticals. Different formulation technologies, e.g., liposome, lipidic nanoparticles, nanoemulsion, nanosuspension, polymeric nanoparticles, lipid polymer hybrid nanoparticles, micelles, and inorganic nanoparticles, have been utilized/evaluated to improve the aforementioned limitations of nutraceuticals.
