Abstract

Tb 3+ and Yb 3+ codoped GdBa 3 B 9 O 18 phosphors were synthesised by high‐temperature solid‐state method. The intensity of visible emission decreases with the increasing of the Yb 3+ concentration. While in the infrared range, the emission peaks at 980 and 1018 nm which originate from the 2 F 5/2 → 2 F 7/2 transition of Yb 3+ are observed and the intensity increases with the increasing of Yb 3+ concentration till 10 mol%. So the cooperative energy transfer from Tb 3+ to Yb 3+ is demonstrated. Based on emission spectra and luminescence life time measurements, the intrinsic quantum efficiency was calculated to approach 139%.
