Electrochemical corrosion behavior of zirconium diboride ceramic in concentrated alkaline solutions
Source abstract
Abstract
In order to promote the application of the fine surface treatment technology in zirconium boride (ZrB 2 ) ceramics, the chemical properties of the ceramic require more researches. Here modern techniques such as potentiodynamic curves and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) were adopted to investigate the electrochemical corrosion behavior of ZrB 2 ceramic in concentrated NaOH solutions. The results show that the active area of anode is the domaint factor to inflence the corrosion rate. The corrosion rate increases with NaOH concentration in 4–8 M NaOH solutions and reach the maximum value in 8–16 M NaOH solution (∼10 mm a −1 , 80 °C). The anodic reaction produces zirconium hydroxide (Zr(OH) 4 ) and borate ions [B 4 O 5 (OH) 4 ] 2− . Parts of Zr(OH) 4 are adsorbed on the electrode surface. The effects of this adsorption on the anodic active areas are also analyzed.
