Abstract

In this work, novel combinations of composite materials were developed, with Kevlar 49 and S-Glass fibers as primary reinforcement and SiC Nano particles as secondary reinforcement with various proportions in epoxy resin as the ratio of 60% and 40% respectively. The tensile strength of the laminates was studied with and without SiC particles and a comparison was made. There was an increase in tensile strength by 35% for 5% SiC and 18% increase for 10% SiC compared to the tensile strength obtained without SiC particles 272 MPa. The maximum tensile strength of 368 MPa was achieved when 5% of SiC was added with the laminate. The composites which had high tensile strength were subjected to Abrasive Water Jet Machining process. The statistical model was developed using RSM technique and quadratic function was used to validate the quality characteristics such as Surface Finish, Kerf Width, and Material Removal Rate. The morphological studies were conducted to correlate the bonding between fibers, matrix, and filler material. An enhanced strength was achieved due to the uniform dispersion of particles in the epoxy resin with less viscosity and minimum air traps.
