Mechanisms of transducer failure in a gamma radiation field

R.W. Smilie, Frank A. Iddings

Abstract

This paper discusses the degradation of ultrasonic transducers (normal beam longitudinal wave and shear wave transducers) in a gamma radiation environment. This paper will not only show that the transducers failed at various doses, but it also discusses their physical breakdown, offers conclusions, and makes recommendations for future use of ultrasonic testing (UT) transducers in a gamma radiation field.
