Experimental study on the hydraulic evolution of low cement-treated construction waste material containing porous red brick
Source abstract
Abstract
Low cement-treated construction waste (LCTCW) has been widely applied in subgrade/subbase and back-filling projects recently. The evolution of its hydraulic behavior during the curing process is an important indicator of material performance. LCTCW often contains porous red brick as part of the recycled aggregates. The water release characteristics exhibited by porous red brick during curing may have a significant impact on the evolution of water content and matric suction in LCTCW. This study conducted systematic hydraulic monitoring using a column test system on two types of LCTCW: with and without red brick. Meanwhile, the image color recognition method was employed to determine the red brick proportion, and the vapor equilibrium technique was used to measure their water release characteristics under different suction conditions. Results suggested that LCTCW with and without red brick showed different evolution of suction and water content during curing. Furthermore, a predictive framework was established to describe the evolution of water content and matric suction in LCTCW containing red bricks, by integrating the systematically quantified water release behavior of red brick into the hydration-controlled evolution equations. This study provides a theoretical basis for investigating the hydraulic behavior evolution of LCTCW containing porous aggregates during curing.
