IMPROVED ANALYTICAL MODEL FOR SHEAR STRENGTH OF CIRCULAR REINFORCED CONCRETE COLUMNS IN SEISMIC REGIONS. DISCUSSION AND CLOSURE

Evan C. Bentz, Michael P. Collins

Abstract

A discussion of a paper with the aforementioned title by M.J. Kowalsky and M.J.N. Priestley, published in this journal (Volume 97, Number 3, May-June 2000), is presented. While generally commending the authors presentation of an improved simple method to predict the shear strength of reinforced concrete columns, the discussers suggest that a small change to the alpha factor and the inclusion of a size effect term will make the proposed method in the original paper notably better. The discussion concludes with closure by the authors.
