PERFORMANCE OF EXISTING BRIDGE COLUMNS UNDER CYCLIC LOADING--PART 2: ANALYSIS AND COMPARISON WITH THEORY. DISCUSSION AND CLOSURE

Nadim Wehbe, M S Saiidi

Abstract

A discussion of a paper with the aforementioned title by O.A. Jaradat, D.I. McLean, and M.L. Marsh, published in this journal (Volume 96, Number 1, January-February 1999), is presented. The discussers maintain that the results presented by the authors have four shortcomings: the point of shear failure is not clearly defined; the displacement ductilities, as measured and reported, are not suitable for the evaluation of shear strength; the specified M/VD ratio should not be emphasized as a significant parameter; and the data show that the UCSD equation overestimates the shear capacity. Discussion is followed by closure from the authors.
