USE OF HELIXES IN REINFORCED CONCRETE BEAMS. DISCUSSION AND CLOSURE

G. Prince Arulraj, Seth Justin

Abstract

A discussion of an earlier paper with the aforementioned title by M.N.S. Hadi and L.C. Schmidt, published in this journal (Volume 99, Number 2, March-April 2002), is presented. The discussers commend the authors of the original paper for their innovative idea of providing helical reinforcement in the compression zone of reinforced concrete beams to enhance the ductility and load-carrying capacity of beams. However, the discussers feel that the concept developed by the authors is applicable only for over-reinforced beams, and request that the authors respond with their view regarding the application of the concept for under-reinforced beams. Closure from the authors is provided.
