ANALYTICAL COMPUTATION OF THE PUNCHING STRENGTH OF REINFORCED CONCRETE. DISCUSSION AND CLOSURE

Iaem Shehata

Abstract

A discussion of a paper with the aforementioned title by P. Menetrey, published in this journal (Volume 93, Number 5, September-October 1996) is presented. The discusser argues that the proposed model for the analysis of punching shear in reinforced concrete lacks rationality and realism and that it is neither an upper bound solution nor a lower bound solution. Furthermore, he maintains that the dowel effect (shear transferred by reinforcing bars crossing a concrete interface) contribution should not be taken into account. Discussion is followed by closure from the author.
