Abstract
A discussion of a paper with the aforementioned title by Xiao, Priestley, and Seible, published in this journal (January-February 1996), is presented. Discusser Burg has several questions for the authors regarding lateral resistance of the footing, lateral capacity deterioration, stability of the rocking mode, and pullout capacity of piles from footings. Burg also asks for additional references that address these issues. Discussion is followed by closure from the authors.
