Abstract

The corrosion resistance of rebars coated with four different cementitious coatings containing nanoparticles of CaCO3, Fe2O3, SiO2 and ZrO2 is reported. The corrosion resistance of nanoparticle-admixed cementitious polymer on rebars in NaCl medium is evaluated using potentiodynamic polarization (PDP) and impressed voltage test (IVT). The corrosion products of coated rebars, without mortar or concrete cover, after immersion in chloride medium were examined using x-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and laser Raman spectroscopy (LRS). The crack initiation time for rebars coated with nanoparticle-admixed cementitious coating in the absence of concrete is significantly higher than uncoated rebars. PDP and IVT results indicate the best coating is CaCO3 coating, and the coating performance followed the trend CaCO3 > SiO2 > ZrO2 > Fe2O3. The results of these studies indicate that the size as well as the distribution of nanoparticles is crucial for the effective pore filling in the cementitious coating. The superior corrosion protection performance of nanoparticle-incorporated coating is attributed to the effective pore-filling capacity and the better physical barrier formed on the rebars. These findings on nanoparticle-admixed cement coated rebars may have important applications in designing high-performance rebar coating with superior corrosion resistance for aggressive conditions.
