Microstructural Evolution and Mechanical Properties of Ti-Fe-Graphene Nanoplatelet Composites Produced by Spark Plasma Sintering
Source abstract
Abstract
Compared to expensive graphene, inexpensive graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs) also have excellent mechanical properties, and an increasing number of studies have demonstrated that the strength of titanium matrix composites (TMCs) reinforced by GNPs is significantly enhanced. In this work, Ti-6Fe-xGNPs composites with different contents of GNPs were prepared by ball milling and spark plasma sintering (SPS), and the effects of GNPs content on the microstructure, mechanical properties and wear resistance of Ti-6Fe-xGNPs composites were systematically investigated. The experimental results showed that some GNPs were retained in the SPS process, while the remaining GNPs reacted with Ti in situ to form a new TiC phase. When the GNPs content was 0.3 wt.%, the Vickers hardness of Ti-6Fe-0.3GNPs increased by 90.2%. The yield strength and ultimate compressive strength of the composites increased by 105.4 and 18.8%, respectively. The strengthening mechanism includes grain refinement, Fe solid solution strengthening and TiC dispersion strengthening. In addition, the wear resistance of the sintered composites was obviously improved with the addition of GNPs. Compared with pure Ti sintered under the same conditions, the wear volume loss of the Ti-Fe-0.3GNPs decreased by 45.3%. This study demonstrates that titanium matrix composites (TMCs) with better performance are developed under the condition of cost control as much as possible.
