Abstract

Friction stir welding (FSW) is a solid-state welding process used to weld aluminium, copper, steel and other metals. The primary function of the fixture is to hold the workpiece during friction stir welding. In the present work, the fixture was designed to improve the heat transfer in FSW of aluminium alloys. An additional heat sink was attached to control the heat flow. A tank was attached to the bottom part of the base plate, and a thermocouple-based thermomechanical model to predict the real-time thermal cycle of FSW. The three different cooling mediums were selected, and samples were tested for better heat transfer during the FSW. The effect of underwater friction stir welding on mechanical and microstructural properties is already analyzed. The underwater welding produces various chemical and surface defects on the welded samples. To remove the problem underwater a fixture with a storage tank was fabricated and the mechanical and microstructural properties of aluminum were tested. The temperature of the storage cooling media was recorded during the welding and compared with conventional FSW. The microstructure and SEM analysis were done for all the samples and the stir zone was analyzed and found better mixing and grain refinement with coolant in the storage tank. The fixture with the storage tank performs significantly on the mechanical properties of the joint.
