Abstract

This study examines the erosion resistance of WC-10Ni5Cr cermet coatings deposited on 35CrMo steel substrates using the high-velocity oxy-fuel spray process. The coatings were evaluated for their effectiveness in mitigating erosion damage under solid particle impact at oblique and normal impingement angles. Air jet erosion testing was conducted with a particle velocity of 40 m/s, varying the impingement angles to replicate diverse impact conditions. The erosion behavior was quantified by measuring weight and volume loss of both coated and uncoated samples. Scanning electron microscopy was utilized to investigate the surface erosion mechanisms. The results revealed that WC-10Ni5Cr coatings significantly improved the erosion resistance of 35CrMo steel. Coated specimens exhibited a combined erosion mechanism, demonstrating superior resistance at oblique angles compared to normal impact angles, highlighting the coating’s potential for enhanced performance in erosion-prone environments.
