Abstract

Cover Photograph : Top : Perfume bottles designers search for specific glass thickness distribution of container: thick versus thin bottom, straight versus curved walls. Left : The container forming IS machine stages of the blow and blow forming process consist of gob loading; settle blow; counter blow; inversion; reheat and stretch; final blow; and removal. It is very important to define the right shape of the counter blow mold which requires a closed mold. Experience and simulation might reduce the number of molds needed to fabricate the containers with the desired thickness distribution. Right: The use of infrared cameras allows for the measurement of temperatures (critical to flow) on areas where glass can be seen, namely gob forming, gob loading, blank mold open, parison reheating, blow mold open, and removal.
