The evaluation of different surface treatment methods for porcelain–composite bonding

Abstract Different adhesive techniques are used in dentistry for intraoral porcelain repair. There is no consensus in the literature regarding the best surface treatment technique for optimum porcelain–composite bonding. Hydrofluoric acid usage with or without silane seems to be an effective technique for this purpose. However, when the potential risk of hydrofluoric acid is considered, tribochemical silica coating technique can be an alternative surface treatment method for intraoral porcelain repair. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of tribochemical silica coating technique for porcelain–composite bonding and to compare this technique with the conventional methods. The results of mechanical test, SEM analysis, bond failure modes and EDS analysis showed that tribochemical silica coating surface treatment technique may be a good alternative to hydrofluoric acid usage for chair-side porcelain–composite bonding.
