Deformation failure mechanism and characterization for black shale tunnels: A case study
Source abstract
Abstract
Excessive deformations in extensive excavations, especially in complex lithologies and tectonic settings, can lead to delays and increased costs. This paper presents a case study on the Guillermo Gaviria Echeverry (GGE) tunnel in the western Colombian mountain range, highlighting the importance of understanding rock characteristics and deformation causes. Focusing on the Penderisco formation, characterized by mudstones , lydites, and chert, with volcanic intrusions, the study investigates the deformations caused by water-induced weakening of clay minerals. Extensive research, including laboratory tests, field investigations, and analytical and numerical modeling, revealed significant deformations following the application of the final support. The study emphasizes the necessity of reevaluating geotechnical models to accurately represent real-world conditions, detailing the process of identifying and addressing the challenges in constructing what is set to be the longest road tunnel in Latin America. Countermeasures were proposed and evaluated through stress–strain analysis and geotechnical characterizations, showcasing a cost-effective technical solution for managing tunnel deformations.
