Seismic performance and repair of Chuan-dou timber-framed masonry building
Source abstract
Abstract
Abstract Chuan-dou timber-framed masonry building, i.e., one of the traditional building types consisting of timber pillars-and-transverse-tie-beams framing system and masonry panels, had been widely built in China. Despite its long building history, the seismic performance and repair of this type of building has not yet been well studied. Thus, a shake-table experimental campaign is carried out to investigate the seismic behaviors of both the original and repaired Chuan-dou timber-framed masonry building. Substantiated by the experimental campaign, a stable energy-dissipating mechanism is achieved in Chuan-dou timber-framed masonry building, i.e., the building can develop cracks in the masonry infill panels to dissipate seismic energy without impairing the integrity of timber frames. Chuan-dou timber-framed masonry building exhibited excellent seismic behavior. Effectiveness of employing carbon fiber reinforced polymers and steel clamps to strengthen seismic damaged Chuan-dou timber-framed masonry building is verified through this shake-table experimental campaign. The energy dissipating capacity of the repaired Chuan-dou timber-framed masonry building is better than the original building.
