Influence of microencapsulated phase change materials on drying shrinkage, pore structure, and gas permeability of blast-furnace slag and metakaolin-based geopolymers
Source abstract
Abstract
This study examines the effect of microencapsulated phase change materials (MPCMs) on the drying shrinkage, pore structure and gas permeability of cement mortars (CMs) and geopolymer mortars (GPMs) based on blast furnace slag (GBFS) with metakaolin (MK) contents of 0%, 10% and 20%. Twelve mortars were analyzed with MPCMs contents of 0%, 5% and 10%. Characterizations included heat of hydration, SEM observations, drying shrinkage, water-accessible porosity, pore size distribution and gas permeability. The results show that incorporating 10% MPCMs reduces heat flux and total heat release by up to 36% and 10% for CMs, and 46% and 23% for GPMs (20% MK). Total porosity increased by around 27% for CMs and 38% for GPMs. MPCMs increased drying shrinkage by up to 75% for GPMs, but had no significant effect on CMs. MPCMs also reduced the critical pore diameter and slightly decreased the gas permeability of GPMs by around 20%.
