Abstract

Red mud, a highly alkaline by-product from alumina production, has attracted increasing attention as a raw material for foamed concrete. However, soluble alkalis influence foam formation and stability, therefore the effects of endogenous(red mud) and exogenous(activators) on bubble stability and properties of foamed concrete were investigated. Soluble alkalis increased the pH and reduced the surface tension of the foaming solution, promoting finer initial bubbles, whereas alkalis from RM and activators reduced the absolute zeta potential and gradually lowered pH. The alkalis accelerated the Ostwald ripening rate from 1.12 × 105 to 3.15 × 105 µm3/min, leading to foam instability. Increasing Na2O dosage enhanced slurry viscosity and yield stress by accelerating geopolymerization, compensating for foam instability. Under optimal conditions, the foamed concrete achieved a bulk density of 1081 kg/m3 and a 28 d compressive strength of 2.98 MPa. These results provide insights into foam stability regulation and alkali fixation through synergistic alkali control.
