Carbonation curing effect on belite-rich cement paste with sugar or salt additive as a set controller
Source abstract
Abstract
This study investigated carbonation curing effect on belite-rich cement paste with sugar or salt additive as a set controller. Increasing additive concentrations consistently diminished the compressive strength due to lowered pH levels and intensified carbonation effects. X-ray diffraction analysis indicated sugar inhibited hydration, which was evident from decreased portlandite content, while salt promoted hydration, which was evidenced by heightened Friedel’s salt peaks. In carbonation curing, both additives reduced the crystallite size due to CaCO3 formation, increased the dislocation density and microstrain, and notably enhanced strain hardening under carbonation curing conditions. Thermogravimetry/differential thermogravimetry analysis showed that carbonation curing increases the formation of calcium carbonate, thereby positively impacting compressive strength.
