Abstract

This study investigated the grinding effect of BA on the mechanical properties and hydration behavior of BA-substituted ordinary Portland cement. An optimal grinding condition was identified that yielded the highest mechanical performance. Insufficient grinding resulted in the presence of BA particles larger than 100 µm, which adversely affected strength throughout the entire hydration period. In contrast, excessive grinding beyond 8 h led to a reduction in compressive strength, likely due to alterations in the crystallographic characteristics of hydration products, pore structure, and particle packing density. Replacing 20% of OPC with BA ground for 3 h produced a 28-day compressive strength that was 11.5% higher than that of the 100% OPC. This enhancement is attributed to the synergistic effects of an optimized hydration process and particle packing density, which resulted in a 49.9% reduction in the macropore fraction.
